One Year Move-rsary

It’s been one year since the Pixl team went remote, which makes this our anniversary. Or maybe we’ll call it our move-rsary. Either way, this honeymoon period has been fantastic and challenging in all the clichéd honeymoon ways. We’ve had to adjust to a new routine, we’ve had to budget time and resources differently, we’ve had to learn better ways to communicate—but in the meantime, we’ve grown to love each other more and more each day.

This year, one of our favorite tools has been Slack, which is a cloud-based collaboration tool. Its name is an acronym for “Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge.” Imagine your social media platform of choice (on steroids) colliding with your professional to-do list. It’s fun, it’s effective, and it keeps us all connected.

We’ve also enjoyed growing into our at-home workspaces, which for many of us were once dusty rooms. Almost every team member has transformed their office in some way, from full remodels to organizational overhauls.

Meanwhile, the company has had it’s own remodel of sorts. We’ve invested in the latest and greatest streaming and video gear, upgraded software and show computers, and sent teammates off for job training.

And this is just scratching the surface of what working remote has allowed us to do. As expected, our productivity is up, our morale is through the roof, and our team is growing. We’re more competitive in the marketplace, we’re more agile for our clients, and best yet: we know it.

Never mind the improvements in the ever-elusive work/life balance. There’s been no traffic to deal with, less ironing of collared shirts, and more flexibility to be with our own families.

Of course, there have been some to-be-expected hardships. Like what it means to work directly across from your dirty dishes and laundry. Or missing each other’s multi-dimensional faces (we talk constantly on video chat). Or discovering that ten hours at your desk without some form of human interaction—be it at the gym or lunchtime—isn’t tenable.

But we’ve navigated the pitfalls, and in doing so we’ve learned better practices, discovered better tools, and figured out there’s very little you can’t do remotely.

So here’s to Pixl’s anniversary. Our move-rsary. We’re so grateful to our teammates and clients for making it possible, and we can’t wait to see what 2019 will bring. But one thing’s for sure, with them in tow, we will continue to make this house a home.
